Carlsen was born and raised in Copenhagen, and studied art at the Copenhagen Art Academy. He explored different styles and techniques, improving his craft. He left Denmark to seek inspiration in other European countries, arriving in New York in 1873. There he continued to explore modernism and develop his style. Carlsen was a forerunner in modernism, and his work has been passed down through generations. His respect for natural settings, skill in detail, and sumptuous compositions have made him one of the most influential and celebrated painters of modernism.
