Poster with the painting Grandmother's Love Letters by the American artist James Carroll Beckwith from the year 1887. James Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917) was a painter, architect and sculptor. He was born in Floyd County, Georgia, but moved as a child to St. Louis, Missouri. There he studied painting under William A. Frerichs and drawing under Leon Pomarede. After moving to New York City in 1879, he established himself as a successful painter. He became known for his portraits and genre pictures, which often reflect his fascination with American nature. Beckwith loved to travel and often went to different cities such as New York, Chicago and San Francisco, to get inspiration for his works.
