He has often been described as one of the leading figurative artists of modern America. Chase was born in Williamsburg, Indiana, and raised in Indianapolis. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and had his first exhibition in 1878. His works were influenced by European impressionism and realism and he preferred to paint landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He is best known for his Impressionist seascapes and is often remembered as one of the first artists to take up the theme of American Impressionism.
