William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) was an American artist best known for his portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and showed an early interest in art. When he was 15 years old, he received his first lessons in oil painting from a local painter. He then received training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. Chase is best known for his paintings that capture simple, everyday moments of American life. He is also known for his portraits and landscapes that often contain strong colors and compositions. Chase was a pioneer of the Impressionist movement in the United States and inspired other American Impressionists such as Childe Hassam and John Henry Twachtman.
