The History of Black Friday

Black Friday originally comes from the United States and always falls on a Friday and always the day after the great traditional American holiday Thanksgiving. The first time Black Friday became a popular shopping day was in 1924 when the American chain Macy's started its Christmas sales with promotions during the Thanksgiving parade in New York. After that, more stores followed and the Friday after Thanksgiving grew to become the beginning of Christmas shopping in the entire United States and eventually the biggest shopping day of the year in the United States. Black Friday is not an official holiday in the US, but many workplaces and schools are still closed to give people the opportunity to shop at discounted prices during Black Friday.

That's how the name Black Friday came about

It is unclear how Black Friday came to be called Black Friday and there are several different theories. Some believe that it comes from stores that turned their red loss numbers into black profit numbers when shopping with promotions gathered on this particular day. Others claim that Black Friday was originally coined by police in Philadelphia in the early 1960s when, after Thanksgiving, people took to the streets and riots broke out among the crowds.

Then Black Friday came to us

Black Friday has long been the biggest shopping day of the year in the United States, but it took a long time before the phenomenon came to us. It wasn't until the 2010s that our businesses and stores embraced the trend and started promoting Black Friday as a big shopping day with discount offers. But since then Black Friday has grown every year and today it is the biggest shopping day of the year both in store and online also with us.
