Vincent van Gogh is one of the greatest painters in the history of art. He painted, among other things, landscapes, objects and portraits with clear character traits such as bold and symbolic colours. His paintings are known for impulsive and expressive brushstrokes, something that has contributed to the foundation of modern art.
Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853. He only painted his first painting at the age of 27, but over a period of just over a decade he created over 2100 works of art, of which 860 were oil paintings. He painted most of these during his last two years of life. Despite the large scale of artwork, he sold only one of his paintings before his death.
