Henri Matisse became famous all over the world for his unique feel for colour and form. Our posters with motifs inspired by Matisse are characterized by decorative abstract shapes, often based on his paper and collage artworks. His paintings, like many of our posters, have an explicit colouring scheme where clear colours are combined with abstract objects to create a unique and decorative expressionism. Painting according to Matisse is a rhythmic arrangement of lines and colours on a flat surface. This is specifically clear in the popular and unique posters inspired by his respected and appreciated feel for colour and form.
Henri Matisse was born in 1869, in Le Cateau-Cambreses, France. When he was just 18 years old, he moved to Paris to study law, but after a period of illness he started painting. A few years later this would lead him to study painting at Academie Julian in Paris, where he studied for Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau. From the early 1900s up until his death in 1954, he created paintings and artworks that soon would make him famous all over the world. At the end of his career, he would also work with paper and collage, which also has become a signature for Matisse art, thanks to his feel for colour and form.
